Ithaca (new business located in Sandusky, OH) Israeli Arms Industries (also called IAI) Savage (US gov't contract slides only)Ĭolt (commercial and US/foreign gov't contract) Even the premium companies such as Kimber, will occasionally produce a handgun that must go back to the factory for whatever reason.Īlso, do not ever evaluate the reliability or quality of any gun while using hand loads, even if loaded on the alter of the Vatican under the watchful eye of you-know-who.Ī.J. So, lots of really good 1911s to choose from but do your homework. But I do like that on a good day when I concentrate, I can shoot ragged hole groups to about 15 yards. Best of all, the gun cost me about $650.00 as I recall.Īs I get older, I can no longer benefit from a gun capable of putting rounds in the same hole. Purists don't like the external extractor on the S&Ws but that does not bother me one bit. It has a good trigger right out of the box and has never suffered a stoppage, including with semi-wadcutters. I have an S&W 1911 and I'm extremely happy with it. No point in spending $3000.00 or so on a plinker. If you're an informal shooter and the gun will reside in the nightstand, perhaps something in the $1000.00 range would be perfectly fine. They provided reasonable combat accuracy but "accurizing" 1911s began on the GI issue guns. Just try us!Īnyway, do you plan to be a competition shooter or an informal target shooter? Will this be your self-defense gun in the nightstand?Īs with the old standby US Army issue 1911, they sounded like an infants' rattle if you shook one but they were reliable. I thread like this could easily run to a thousand responses as most everybody knows most everything regarding the 1911. Find the one with the features you like, get a bunch of ammo, enjoy, don't look back.Īlso you can find many new Baers for $1800 or so. Who knows what I'll say tomorrow? There are more great builders of 1911s today than at any other time. Les builds his guns to be "hard fit", it's the 3rd one I've owned, bought my older son one when he was home on R&R during his first deployment in '06. My Baer fyi was built in 2000, still hasn't turned purple ahahahaa, has about 600 rds through it (I'm the second owner) and is 100% reliable. I still thoroughly enjoy my Thunder Ranch Special and for the money can't think of a better 1911 for MY purposes.

When I wanted a full factory semi-custom in the 90s I moved to Les Baer, I also have a custom 1911 built by a local master on a Caspian slide/frame with a Kart barrel/bushing, Koenig and Brown ignition parts/safeties. When I got away from competition and wanted a self defense pistol I would've said a custom Colt or Springfield by Wayne Novak. When I got into IPSC competition in the late 70s and early 80s I would've said a custom built by Bill Wilson.

I know all this because I have met Bruce and he told me thestore personally which I consider one of those priceless story that you wouldhad paid to hear. Also the gun is identified as a "PSP-07 provided by Federal Ordnance"during the end credits of the movie. Well Bruce who was one of the gunsmiths at Federal Ordnance build (machined) the lower receiver fit and finished the slide to the receiver and then itted the Federal Ordnance compensator to the pistol. The slide came through Federal Ordnance which was located in El Monte California unfortunately they had to close their doors due to thestrict gun laws passed in California thanks to Clinton and locally corrupt Politicians in Sacramento.

Peter Stahl did not build the lower receivers, Springfield used the slides to make the Omega and a few gunsmiths bought the slides and used various different lowers to build pistols. The slide is a German Made Peter Stahl multi caliber you could change the barrels from 9mm, 10mm, 41 A.E.
